Name Change - Adult or Child

A name change for a child is sought for the purpose of keeping the child’s name the same as that of the custodial parent.  A name change for an adult can be sought for many reasons so long as it is not wrongful, fraudulent, or capricious.

A petition for name change of a child can be filed by a parent, a managing conservator or a guardian.  The petition cannot be filed if the child has become a legal adult by turning 18, getting married or having the disabilities of minority removed.
